Central to the West has been the allegiance of the US and Europe. But Trump's December 2025 Strategic Review outlined a very different world order in which the US is not necessarily allied to Europe at all. Instead, the US lays claim to a sphere of influence covering the whole of the Americas, North and South. If there was any doubt that this was mere rhetorical hyperbole, Trump has said the US will "run" Venezuela following the capture of Maduro, and laid claim to the huge territory of Greenland even though European states believe its annexation would be the end of NATO.
Europe is re-arming, but must it stand on its own as a great military power in its own right? With a GDP equivalent to the US and larger than China, Europe has the economic clout to be a major global power, but can it do so while lacking a single leadership structure? Or is Trump right and the future of Europe is a dwindling power with ever-diminishing cultural significance?
