People in places like Okinawa, Sardinia, and Ikaria have long fascinated scientists because many appear to live unusually long, healthy lives. Their communities became known as "blue zones" and inspired research into how our surroundings can shape health.

But blue zones have grown into something much bigger than a scientific idea. Today, cities across the US pay to become certified Blue Zones Communities, hoping changes to streets, restaurants, schools, and workplaces can help people live longer.

So can longevity really be engineered? Or has a simple public health message become a powerful wellness brand?
