Portugal’s new nationality law changes got me thinking…
Are Black expats becoming too obsessed with dual citizenship?
Ironically, I just received approval for my new 3-year residency in Portugal while all of these citizenship changes were unfolding, and it really reinforced something I’ve been thinking about for a while:
Citizenship should be a nice-to-have — not the entire strategy.
In this video, I’m sharing my thoughts on:
→ Portugal’s new nationality law changes
→ Why residency is still incredibly valuable
→ The emotional relationship many Black Americans have with the United States
→ Why some people romanticize second citizenship
→ The responsibilities people gloss over when it comes to citizenship
→ Why your US tax obligations don’t magically disappear abroad 😭
→ Why I believe global mobility and multiple residencies may be smarter than passport obsession
I also talk about other countries on the African continent that are creating meaningful citizenship pathways for the diaspora for those who truly want that experience.
At the end of the day, no country owes us immigration access forever. Policies change. Governments change. Timelines change.
That’s why I believe the real goal should be building a flexible, diversified international life.
Correction: I mistakenly referenced the Voting Rights Act as 1968 during the video. The Voting Rights Act was enacted in 1965.
