Here are the seven (six active) fans from the old VUFan rig (see http://hackaday.com/2007/08/16/vufan-vu-meter) being controlled by Winamp via DiscoLitez, a C++ network-to-serial bridge, and an Arduino interpreting the serial commands to control the fans.
