Did you ever wonder why some icebergs are white and others are blue? Up north, at the polar destinations of Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, and the North Pole, ice is the main element of the scenery. Vast glacier fronts spreading as far as the eye can see, towering icebergs slowly trailing the fjords and inlets, and glistening vistas of ice on the mirror-calm waters – ice is ever-present. But the spectrum of colors it may have will amaze any traveler!
During our expedition cruises, we encourage passengers to stay curious and happily answer their questions with the help of our polar expedition team. Historians, marine biologists, glaciologists, and scientists are among our guest lecturers and regular staff onboard. On this Arctic cruise, we were joined by Lutz Beckebanze, a meteorologist from the University of Hamburg. He will let you in on the secret of all the shades of ice!
