Project Introduction -
It is the development of a 3D printing facility that is situated on an occupied bridge across the River Thames in London. It’s important to understand that the project is identified as a product of design fiction that aims to explore a possible future by creating a speculative scenario that is narrated through the designed elements such as the bridge and the facility. It relies on the question ‘what if’ and sits within this framework that stimulates a discussion around a future where society has been transformed with the emergence of new technologies. There is an underlying narrative that stems back to old traditions that derived from various components. The novel - 'The Bridge', written by Iain Banks initiated the idea of a contained world on an endless bridge. This led me to consider existing occupied bridges, such as the Old London Bridge built in 1209 - which was cluttered with buildings and people. Many of these buildings were independent businesses that provided a specific service. The owners would specialise in a trade and create bespoke items. Their lives revolved around their business, living within complete containment in their activities. They would live out their lives on this bridge.these ideas were adopted in generating my projects framework. Old traditions were translated into a contemporary condition. Through incorporating modern technology into this discussion, a new narrative was created through the involvement of the bridge - a traditional model has returned due to these modern technologies. that context is really responsible for all the decisions that were made throughout the development. imagine a world that is so heavily reliant on the internet. Where e-commerce has created such a convenience to the point that people do not have to necessarily leave their homes, everything is delivered to their door. And what remains is production, and distribution - that's what happens at this facility.
