What does the future look like for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art? In this public program, six architectural firms shared the perspectives they’ll bring to their proposals for a landmark expansion to the museum’s campus.
Now, the finalists will develop concept designs for the expansion. Their architectural models will be featured in a free exhibition at the museum beginning March 15, 2025.

About the Global Architectural Competition:
In October 2024, the Nelson-Atkins launched a global call to find an outstanding architect-led team for a world-class expansion to its campus — aiming to transform the museum with a dynamic, open, and inviting design.
From more than 180 international submissions, the Nelson-Atkins narrowed to six prestigious architectural firms for the competition’s final phase: Kengo Kuma & Associates (Tokyo), Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Genoa), Selldorf Architects (New York), Studio Gang (Chicago), Weiss/Manfredi Architecture (New York), WHY Architecture (Los Angeles).
The finalists will take a few months to develop concept designs for the expansion. Their architectural models will be unveiled in a free exhibition at the museum beginning March 15, 2025. There, members of the public can view the designs and submit their feedback.
