๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ  Arapaima / Pirarucu Scales โ€“ Natureโ€™s Amazon Armor

The giant Arapaima, locally known as Pirarucu, is one of the most iconic freshwater fish of the Amazon. But its scales are just as fascinating as the fish itself.

Each scale is like a piece of natural armor: a hard, highly mineralized outer surface protects against bites, while inner layers of collagen fibers give flexibility and strength. Scientists study these scales because they can inspire lightweight, flexible armor materials โ€” especially because Arapaima live alongside predators such as piranhas.

In Amazonian culture, Pirarucu scales were not just waste. Dried scales have been used as natural nail files and sanding tools, and they are also found in local crafts, jewelry, decorations, traditional costumes and even ethnic-style masks.
