When America started bombing Iraq in the early 2000's I felt terrified, disgusted and ashamed of what my country was doing. So when I had the opportunity to sit down with someone who lived through the war from the other side, I couldn’t resist but to ask some questions from the heart. The crazy thing to imagine is that we both started at two opposite ends of the story and met each other as immigrants in Warsaw Poland.

Note to viewer: The horrific tragedy of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko gave me a far deeper understanding of Polish history. I believe people in Europe must take these stories into consideration before passing any judgment on our domestic politics. Those brutal images must be known.
For ages Ive been planing to visit the town of Suchowola, one of the places claiming to be the geographical centre point of Europe. I was moved by the contrasts of people I met and ultimately concluded that in the scope of history it is also a very complicated place to be.

According to some, Poland is regarded as “the Texas of Europe”. Unwilling to conform with what is considered by the citizens to be unrighteous. Poles have demonstrated this many times throughout history - some times at great controversy and astonishingly as a result the Republic of Poland exists today. The solidarity movement and abolishment of communism might be my favorite example of Polish community values. Hence on today’s episode of Kult America I visit the places and people of Solidarity- AKA - Niezależny Samorządny Związek Zawodowy „Solidarność”.

Growing up in America I always identified myself as “Half Polish”, this was a normal part of my identity as my Great Grandmother sent packages containing my childhood clothing to relatives in Poland. When she passed away the contact stopped and I wondered desperately who she had been in touch with on the other side, what family members I might have. So I composed a family tree and did as much research as I could before finally having the amazing opportunity of flying from Newark NJ to Rzeszów on LOT Polish airlines to visit the part of Poland where my living relatives still live. The beautiful village located in the Podkarpackie region is my family’s history, the place responsible for the existence of everyone I love. This was the most meaningful trip of my life and for anyone of Polish heritage, I’d insist you take the time to discover your own ancestry in the same way.
