Today’s Internet is a playground for hackers. From insecure communication links to inadequately guarded data in the cloud.
Quantum networks will allow information to be created, stored and transmitted at a level of security that is impossible to achieve with today’s Internet.
Similar to your brain, where many nerve cells are arranged together to form a network of nerves, the quantum processors form a quantum network.
But unlike our brain, quantum systems require ridiculous accommodations for example very low temperature environments and precise controls.
The project aQUARiUM precisely addresses the issue of controlling and operating in normal conditions while enhancing efficiency. For this, we create a medium with special properties.
Most of the mediums in our daily life have positive optical indexes, usually more than 1. For example, glass has an index of 1.45, water has 1.33 and air has 1.
However, we want to reduce this index and make it closer to zero.
When the index has a near zero value, this environment “stretches” the distances.
%There is no need for precise control anymore and this also enables enhanced and more coherent interactions of the excitations even in normal conditions.%
To generate this medium, we use nano fabrication techniques. First, we obtain the planar surfaces with strain and then release them to obtain the 3D rolled-up tubes less than 1000th the diameter of human hair.
But don’t let their small size deceive you. The medium inside these specially designed and obtained micro- tubes acts as an index near zero medium, so they provide the needed environment for quantum networks. There is no need for precise control or low temperatures anymore.
This will lead to long-distance networks for quantum computers and the internet.
Quantum networks will one day replace the classic ones we use now. We don't know the limits of this technology yet but there's only one way to find out.
