The Proper Liturgy of Maundy Thursday celebrates the events of the Last Supper, including the foot washing and the institution of the Eucharist. Maundy Thursday is widely observed as the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The setting, however, is not the institution narrative, but the Gospel according to St. John. There, Jesus takes a towel and washes the feet of his disciples, instituting a servant ministry. On Maundy (from the Latin mandatum, or commandment) Thursday, we follow Jesus’ command and wash one another’s feet. Then, the Eucharist is celebrated with fullness until the organ falls silent and the consecrated Bread is placed on the Altar of Repose, after which we wait in vigil.
