The most outer units all fit within a specified sphere, the maximal distance between the center of any unit center of the shape is the square-root of 6. Layer 2 (as shown in the image at the end of the video) shows the shape of a cross. When units are added to fill the corners of the cross, the center of these units are too far away from the center of the total shape. The distance is the square-root of 3*(1.5*1.5)=6.75.
