Prep work:

I had a 2 nice side plywood to start with, which makes sanding a lot easier. I sanded with 80 grits and moved up to 220 and I primed it black.

prior of applying the self adhesive vinyl, I sanded with 220 a few times until I could see the wood grains through the primer.

applying the vinyl is easier with 2 person. I bought self adhesive vinyl with air gap release which allows the air to escape through the paper and limits the air bubbles.
