The Left Behind series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins is a set of twelve novels following a small group of individuals trying to survive the period of tribulation from the book of Revelation in the Bible after the rapture removes the Christian population and leads to the death of many others.
The series begins with the Christian rapture, where all Christians in the world mysteriously vanish in an instant. The world dissolves into chaos as Rayford, a pilot, begins searching for answers, as his wife and son are among the disappeared. He meets a pastor, Bruce, who was left behind because his faith wasn’t real, and Rayford becomes a Christian. Together, they form the Tribulation Force, a group of people who have become Christians since the rapture and are determined to survive until the return of Christ, which will end the tribulation and the world itself. They make plans to build bunkers and eventually develop an underground Christian support network to help the persecuted Christians through this time. Rayford’s daughter, Chloe, and reporter Buck eventually join after converting to Christianity.
Nicolas Carpathia, the Antichrist, begins a reign of power as he takes over the United Nations, ostensibly ushering in peace around the world but in reality twisting the world to worship him and reject Christ. His treaty with Israel signals the beginning of the tribulation, where, as in the book of Revelation, God begins dispensing his judgment on the earth. Among these events is the Wrath of the Lamb earthquake, which rocks the world, killing twenty-five percent of its population, a massive world war, and famines and plagues. Additionally, two heavenly prophets arrive at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem and begin preaching and performing miracles, representing Moses and Elijah from the Bible.
Everything comes to a head when, halfway through the tribulation, Carpathia murders the two prophets, only for the world to watch them return to life and then be lifted into the heavens. Rayford attempts to assassinate Carpathia, as is prophesied in the Bible, in his world capital of New Babylon, but his friend, the aging Jewish botanist Chaim Rozensweig, gets to the Antichrist first, killing him with a homemade sword. The Antichrist is then resurrected and possessed by Satan, and he establishes his new religion, compulsory for the world to follow, centered upon himself.
The new government of the world, run by the Antichrist, forces everyone to be registered with a tattoo on their hand or forehead, which Christians resist. The Christians, meanwhile, begin to notice they all have a marking on their forehead that is only visible to other Christians, allowing them to identify one another. As the tribulation continues, the Tribulation Force has grown into a worldwide organization, but the core members are being killed off over time. The group manages to relocate from the United States to the ancient Jordanian site of Petra, where God provides manna for them to eat, and they prepare for the final battle of Armageddon.
Finally, at the end of days, Carpathia sends an overwhelming military force against the stronghold of the Christians and vows to destroy Christ himself when he returns—after he has been beheading Christians with guillotines for several years. He launches his attack, and Christ returns, riding a white horse and slaying the armies with the words of his mouth. Massive hail and fire from heaven consumes his enemies as he and the Christians march to Jerusalem, where he captures and judges Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet. The raptured and previously dead Christians are returned to Earth as Christ instills his thousand-year reign of peace on a restored, sinless earth before he will judge the living and the dead and remake heaven and earth into a perfect utopia, as he had originally planned for Eden.
