Fire and Emergency NZ said they were alerted to a vegetation fire in the suburb of Albert Town at 7:28pm on Saturday, and were attacking it from "multiple points".

In a briefing to RNZ, Fire and Emergency District Assistant Commander Nic McQuillan said firefighters were trying to dampen down the fire, which was being driven by strong North westerly winds.

One resident described the blaze as "apocalyptic".
