I compare the edgy art of Basquiat (died 1988 at age 27) today selling in the tens of millions of dollars with Apocalyptic sects in Christianity based on 100 year old Fundamentalist ideas. To people uninitiated to modern art history, Basquiat art seems bizarre and atrocious. Why would anyone value it? The same remains true of Fundamentalism that to outsiders and many scholars appears as a disturbing distortion to faith.
So, both fundamentalism and many aspects of modern art are “populist” or primitive in style. Basquiat appeared as a tag prophet from the graffiti streets to sell to collectors through major galleries. Most of fundamentalism came from populist itinerant preachers who, like Billy Graham sold it in major “galleries” raising radical evangelical ideas into lucrative political capital.

I refer to American Apocalypse by Matthew Sutton.
