Aphra Behn’s poem TO THE FAIR CLARINDA | 17th Century Restoration English Literature | Analysis & close reading of Aphra Behn’s poem ‘To the Fair Clarinda, who made Love to me, imagin’d more than Woman. By Mrs. B.’ (1688), focusing especially on Aphra Behn’s playing with & challenging of gender roles, gender norms, & gender expectations. The lecture also considers Aphra Behn’s biography & gendered defence of herself & sex in the preface to her play The Luckey Chance (1686).

• analyses the preface to Aphra Behn’s play The Luckey Chance, where Behn promotes “my Masculine Part the Poet in me” whilst calling herself “a defenceless Woman”
• analyses and close reads Aphra Behn’s poem To the Fair Clarinda
• briefly contextualises Aphra Behn, outlining a hostile contemporary response to her works in A Journal from Parnassus (c.1688).
