On the southeast shoulder of Mount St. Helens in the state of Washington, along the edge of the Plains of Abraham, there is a gorge called Ape Canyon. The area was given its name after a 1924 encounter after five prospectors stumbled out of the woods telling a story about an encounter they allegedly had with "apemen".
