Call it distrust, call it dislike of Americans, call it internal issues with squatters and non-paying tenants but there are some things you need to be aware of if you’re looking to rent in Madrid and you DON’T have a Spain-based work contract
1. 6 months of rent upfront + deposit
2. Passport, paystubs, proof of employment for you & defacto payee (regardless if you can prove sufficient income)
3. 1/2 month’s worth of rent in annual fees
4. Ambiguous writing in contracts
