🧬 DNA, RNA, and the Code of Life!
How do living systems store and pass on the instructions for life itself? In this video, we explore AP Biology Topic 1.6: Nucleic Acids, diving into the structure and function of DNA and RNA as outlined in the 2025 AP Biology Course & Exam Description.
We’ll break down how nucleotides—the monomers of nucleic acids—combine into DNA and RNA polymers. Each nucleotide contains a sugar (ribose or deoxyribose), a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base (A, T, G, C, or U). The sequence of these bases encodes biological information, which is central to Big Idea 3: Information Storage and Transmission.
Then, we’ll zoom into how genetic information gives survival advantages to real organisms—including rock pocket mice and kangaroo rats in the deserts of the American Southwest. From coat-color genes that provide camouflage against predators, to genes that help withstand dry desert conditions, nucleic acids are the ultimate instruction manual for desert survival.
Perfect for AP Bio students, teachers, or anyone curious about how life stores and uses information at the molecular level.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of DNA and RNA
Identify the components of a nucleotide: sugar, phosphate, nitrogenous base
Explain how sequences of bases encode biological information
Connect nucleic acids to real-world survival strategies in desert rodents
