Things I learned from my trip:
Japan has sandy soil. With the trees and shrubs there’s not a lot of home composting or mulching. The soil around the shrubs is tamped down.
The gardens are always tidy. Even in winter. Sweep up those leaves!
Have fewer plants. Less is more. Punctuate areas with the odd small plant.
Add stones as edging.
Prune the bottom branches out so that you can see the trunks of shrubs.
