The Antonito Community History Collection is a part of History Colorado’s Community Centered Collections Project (2021-2024), a project that prioritizes the interest of communities in interpreting, preserving, and making accessible their local histories on their own terms. The Antonito Community History Collection brings together stories and memories of the Antonito community and its surrounding villages. Founded in 1880 as a sheep herding camp, Antonito is located in Conejos County in Southern Colorado. The collection explores the history of the community from the late 1800s to the present from the voice and perspective of community storytellers who shared accounts, documents and photos as part of a 3-year grassroots collecting effort centered on co-creation.
