The 'Adamastor' is a greek-type mythological character famed by the poet 'Luís de Camões' in the epic poet 'The Lusíadas'. This charcater is a huge titan, it represents one of the titans/giants, sons of Zeus that were lost or banished to Earth, the Adamastor is the giant spurned by Thetis, a sea nymph.
This titan is a representation of the forces of nature the portuguese sailors had to overcome; this giant is a piece of land near Cape Point (or Cape Point itself) that the portuguese sailors had to pass in order to reach indian territory.
Cape Town back in ancient times was called "Cape of Torments" by the portuguese sailors due to strong winds, violent storms, it happened because of the clash of the Atlantic and Indic oceans where many ships used to sink back in the days because of all those natural factors, so the poet "Camões", made refference to this terrorizing titan as a symbol of the dangers the portuguese sailors had to overcome in order to reach other territories beyond Africa.
