Born and raised in New Brunswick, Anthony Marchetta graduated from New Brunswick High School, went to Rutgers, and then worked for the City of New Brunswick. In his interview, he talks about the heyday, decline and renewal of New Brunswick. Marchetta began working for New Brunswick in housing rehabilitation as a part of the federal program Federally Assisted Code Enforcement (FACE). After the feasibility study conducted by the American Cities Corporation, New Brunswick Tomorrow (NBT) and the New Brunswick Development Corporation (Devco) were formed. Marchetta analyzes the interplay between Johnson & Johnson, the city government and the redevelopment agencies. Having served on the board of the George Street Playhouse for sixteen years and as president from 1981 to 1985, Marchetta traces the evolution of the theater over the years. Throughout the oral history, Marchetta discusses various projects, education, transportation, city politics, key figures, the effects of gentrification, and the role Rutgers played in the city’s redevelopment.
