Tune in to hear from Ansel Adams in Our Time featured artists Stephen Tourlentes, Victoria Sambunaris, and Abelardo Morell. This program includes artist presentations and conversation moderated by Emilia Mickevicius, Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at the Center for Creative Photography and Phoenix Art Museum.

Stephen Tourlentes lives in Boston, where he has taught photography at the Massachusetts College of Art since 1988.In elegant large-format photographs, he investigates the uneasy relationship between institutions for incarceration and their neighboring communities.

Victoria Sambunaris, in her large-scale photographs of American landscapes, captures the grandeur of nature, marked, sometimes subtly, sometimes aggressively, by human intervention. Her landscapes are rarely pristine. As she explains: “I am captivated by . . . the idea of how we inhabit our landscapes and what they become as we forge ahead in our development.”

Abelardo Morell was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948 and immigrated to the United States in 1962. Morell received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and his MFA from the Yale University School of Art. He has received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1994, an Infinity Award in Art from ICP in 2011, and a Lucie Award for achievement in in 2017.

Emilia Mickevicius is the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at the Center for Creative Photography and Phoenix Art Museum. In 2019 she received her PhD from Brown University, where she completed a dissertation on New Topographics.
