🚨 HOW MUCH PROTEIN IS TOO MUCH? - Video 2 in The Protein Myth Series
We’re constantly being told to eat MORE protein—especially as we get older.
But a large study following more than 19,000 people raises some important questions about that advice.
In adults over age 55, consuming at least 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day was associated with a 36% higher risk of major cardiovascular events.
And across the overall study population, very high protein intake was associated with:
⚠️ 39% higher risk of death from any cause
⚠️ 43% higher risk of heart failure
⚠️ 50% higher risk of heart attack
⚠️ 73% higher risk of cardiovascular death
For perspective, 1.8 g/kg is about 122 grams of protein a day for a 150-pound person and 147 grams for a 180-pound person. That is a common amount recommended to people by their doctors or personal trainers.
Important: this was an observational study, so it shows an association—it does NOT prove that high protein caused these outcomes.
But it does challenge the assumption that if some protein is good, MORE must always be better.
Protein is essential. The goal should be to get enough, not to maximize it at the expense of everything else our bodies need.
This is exactly why I keep saying we need to become less protein-focused and more nourishment-focused. 🌱
Instead of asking, “How can I get more protein?”
Ask: “How can I get more nourished?”
