I learned how to create a thick, hand carved setting for round and oval shapes a couple of weeks ago. This time was about tackling pear shaped stones. I really picked up some nice tips here. To leave alone the top part of the setting (the tip) was one of them. Instead of burring away from the top to create a seat for the tip of the stone, the clue was to start burring on a lower level. The top edge stays as it is and you force your burr underneath. When you slide in your stone it is a bit tilted. Difficult to explain in writing. If you are from the Netherlands and curious about this setting technique, you can contact Aletta who provides these masterclasses: https://www.goudsmidutrecht.nl/masterclass-zetten/. And if you're not from the Netherlands and my explanation leaves you with more questions than answers, look me up on Patreon. I have posted over 140 metalsmithing tutorials / videos for you to watch. Have a great day!
