Note: This setting is based on the real village of Empire, Michigan. It is inspired by my love of Michigan and its beautiful lakeshores, sand dunes, and many unique, small towns.
Welcome to Paradise, Michigan! This picturesque village of just a few hundred people can be found nestled in the middle of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore along Lake Michigan and the Leelanau Peninsula, or “Little Finger” region of the state’s lower peninsula.
It is 1980-something and Paradise is celebrating its centennial. Founded by a lumber company in the 1880s, the village has become a scenic stop for tourists traveling along the lakeshore during the summer months. Paradise proudly boasts the fact that there are no chain restaurants, stores, or other businesses in the village. Instead you will find an assortment of taverns, cafes, antique shops, bookstores, and more all run by the residents of Paradise, Michigan. To the south the beautiful Paradise Bluffs overlook Lake Michigan, and to the north is South Bear Lake, a local favorite for fishing, water skiing, and swimming.
Every year, a variety of kids and teens are sent to spend the summer with their grandparents, all of whom reside in the Twilight Grove Senior Living Community on the western edge of Paradise. These kids, usually from all over Michigan and beyond, quickly band together and begin exploring the village and the surrounding areas on their bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, and more.
Is it true there’s a monster that sleeps in the mud at the bottom of South Bar Lake, waiting to eat any who dare swim after dark? Is the Candle Point Lighthouse secretly the remnants of a crashed spaceship? Is the historic Stapler House really haunted? Do all the teachers go into slumber in hidden catacombs beneath the school between school years? All these questions and more will be explored by these Kids on Bikes.
The summer is theirs and adventure awaits!
