Ana Mo Shoshin | Annotating Poetry ASMR | Selected Poems of Claude McKay | Harlem Renaissance, Jamaican Poetry @AnaMoShoshin | Uploaded July 2023 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Hi, I’m Mo.
This was my first experience with Claude McKay's (1890-1948) writing. I was very happy to chance upon this volume at my local used bookshop! Otherwise I might never have know about his work. I did struggle with this collection as some of it was written in a Jamaican dialect and the rest in rhyming language. I found it really really hard to get through this work. But I did enjoy it! It just meant that I didn't have a ton to underline or annotate. I enjoyed many full poems in this work especially those dealing with racism and inequality. I read this collection in order, page, by page, bc the poems were collected by timeline.
I like to read poetry books by going thru and reading whatever poems catch my eye at first. These are usually the shortest poems. Then I read thru the book again, this time reading more that I hadn't read yet. Then I usually read it again and finish any poems I still haven't read. These last few are usually the longest. As I go thru, I dog ear the bottom of any page that catches my eye.
After that last pass through, once I've read all the poems, I mark it as read. Then a little while later, I go through one last time and highlight the poems or lines, or stanzas, that I really loved or want to remember. That is what you are seeing in this video.
I only do this process for books that I know I will keep and want to reread. If there is only one or two poems or lines, I know I won't keep the book, or it's a borrowed book, I just take a picture of the lines I like.
How do you read poetry?
