This film directed by Bruce Seth Green shows the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The academy opened in October of 1845 and it is the second oldest of the five US service academies. The school pumps out midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the US Navy and the Marines. It was created to provide a look into the day in the life of a midshipmen featuring the class of 1976 at the famed US Naval Academy in Annapolis. The film opens with sailors chanting to their commanding training officer (:13). Black and white photographs of sailors in uniform appear (:16) under the title screen. A traffic cop (1:19) guides a line of cars. A young boy begins by narrating his fears about his first day at the Naval Base (1:30). A young midshipmen has his neck measured (1:39). He explains the transition from civilian to military life (1:47). Finger prints are taken (1:59), weight is documented (2:13) and head shots are taken (2:23). Everyone gets a haircut (2:31). They receive inoculations (2:50) as anxieties are heard from the midshipmen about entering service. The youth are sent to their rooms, packs on their backs (3:12). Midshipmen attempt to adjust to the highly structured environment (3:49). They salute as a high ranking officer enters (3:52). One man receives reprimand over a faulty salute (4:02) and uniform (4:12). The midshipmen oath is heard (4:42) as friends and family snap photographs. The camera pans out to show the full class of 1976 (4:50). The Plebe Summer (5:08) is designed to turn the civilians into midshipmen. This is a notoriously difficult training session taking place over a course of six to seven weeks (5:08). They chant a Navy Fight Song (5:17). The workout begins with the strength routine (5:39) as the sun peeks over the horizon. The academy is pictured in the background (6:54) as midshipmen practice drills. Weapons training begins with a small pistol (7:42). An over the shoulder view shows a midshipmen peering into machine gun sights (7:59). They snap off rounds at targets (8:05). The grueling physical training exercises continue through obstacle courses (8:15). Midshipmen are pictured at the mess hall (9:15) still taking orders as they chew. The Company Commander delivers praise for improvements made during the drills (11:01). Early morning shots of the campus grounds follow (11:35). Midshipmen are pictured working with communications equipment (12:09) and in the chemistry lab (12:21). An instructor discusses Napoleon (12:34). Row boats are pumped across the Chesapeake Bay (13:26). Midshipmen are required to participate in sports (13:32). The Navy midshipmen football team is pictured during practice (13:37) and during an actual game (13:59). Midshipmen in the stands cheer (14:27). Snowy images feature the midshipmen during Christmas leave (14:43). Textbooks are pictured (15:00). The majors program is discussed (15:04). The Herndon Monument Climb (15:38) is a tradition dating to 1940. Midshipmen must build a human pyramid to remove the Dixie cup hat at the top of the greased monument in order to replace it with the upperclassman’s hat. It is explained the Dixie cup is the first thing they are to wear as a ‘Plebe’ (15:50). The Dixie cup is knocked off and the hat is stuck on the top (16:08). Midshipmen are interviewed after (16:24). A Navy battleship floats on the water (16:46). Seniors, now known as first classmen are designated to take a three month cruise on a battleship. They travel to locations in Europe as the stunning architecture of the Notre Dame cathedral is filmed (17:12). Midshipmen pass under the Pont Alexandre III deck arch bridge (17:17). Artwork is set out on display at an open air market (17:22). They zoom up the Eiffel tower (17:27). The Eiffel tower is pictured from the ground (17:30). The Kaman UH-2A Seasprite lifts off (17:34). Midshipmen scheduled for halo indoctrination flights are called to the flight deck (18:09). Crash landing is discussed whether on land or into water (18:24).
