The department manages 300 miles of roadway, 460 miles of water mains, 360 miles of sanitary sewer, over 300 miles of stormwater infrastructure and 54,000 roadway trees. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan.
Ann Arbor Public Works collects and analyzes thousands of data points every day from infrastructure, equipment, residents and field staff. The department rebuilt its computerized maintenance management system around ten years ago and tied every role to the asset management platform.
Automatic vehicle location runs in every snowplow, showing residents where trucks have been in real time. Rain gauges record at 15-minute intervals and publish that data publicly. The A2 Fix It app lets residents report issues by photo directly to supervisors.
Residents benefit through safer streets, more reliable utilities, healthier trees, better stormwater management and more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
