Recently I got into this song again. I know it is most likely originally meant to be a song about one-sided not coming true love, but I thought it can be seen as a song about death since the lyrics suggest it: "I met your ghost, he followed me", "in my head if we can be together maybe we'll live forever"
So here are the stories about characters losing important ones.
Simba and Mufasa part is almost – or maybe entirely – canon, the older Simba gets the harder for him to take Mufasa's death, he remembers all the talks he and Mufasa had, imagining talking to Mufasa and wishing he was near him.
Zira / Simba, this one is AU in which Zira wanted to follow Scar's footprints like in canon but soon found out she fell in love with Simba without noticing it.
It shocked her, it felt like betraying Scar, but Zira couldn't fight those feelings.
At some point she confessed to Simba, but he couldn't love her back, he was with Nala and Nala was pregnant.
Zira imagined an alternative world where she and Simba are together and Kiara is their daughter.
Zira stopped supporting Scar, but other lionesses don't, they plotted against Simba and one day set up the trap, so Simba fell from the cliff to his death.
Zira tried to save him, but she was too late and she had to watch him die. She ran away before Nala and other pridelanders came 'cause she knew she would be blamed for Simba's death, nobody truly believed she had left Scar's side.
Often Zira pretends Simba is alive, but then knows it's a lie and it's torturing her, she sees Simba in the beautiful jungles, knowing he would never be there again.
Todd / Copper, in this AU they went from best friends to lovers, were meeting in secret when they got adult, even if at first it felt complicated l, but they were remembering happy childhood moments, gave this love a chance and it turned out to be true.
One day Copper went hunting with his master and was killed. Todd can't accept it, the world ended for him at this moment, now Todd lives only in his imagination where Copper is alive, they are together and have so much in the future.
Kiara and Simba, this AU continues Zira / Simba AU, Kiara was a teenager when Simba died, she sees her father everywhere, in the places they were together she thinks she saw his ghost.
Kiara keeps her distance from the pride, even from Nala who is the only ruler Nala and is more busy than ever.
Kiara can't go anywhere without being reminded of Simba, but he is not there anymore, and Kiara is alone in this new sunset.
