This Cape Porcupine was the found by a member of the public. There was a request to remove her from the train track, so sea search stepped in to remove the animal and preserve them for scientific research.

Cape porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis)

A nocturnal animal

The largest rodent in Africa over 10 kgs

Spines up to 50 cm - with shorter thicker defence quills

Hollow spines on rump produce a rattling sound to warn away predators

When attacked, the porcupine freezes. If cornered, it turns vicious and charges to stab its attacker with its quills

Strong paws for digging

Long lived and monogamous- breeding pairs have 1-3 porcupettes each year.
