Input: two green cranks performing angular oscillating motion.
Output: orange chain sprocket shaft to which two pink ratchet wheels are fixed.
Two blue pawls cause the ratchet wheels to rotate in one direction.
The pawls are forced towards the ratchet wheels by leaf springs.
The green cranks turn in opposite directions thanks to Hobson’s joints (yellow arm and violet angular rods).
Two brown cams are used when it is necessary to prevent the pawls from contacting the ratchet wheels (last scene of the video). For example, let the output shaft rotate in the opposite direction by another source of motion.
This pedaling method is more efficient than pedaling at full rotation because the pedal force is always perpendicular to the crank. This mechanism helps to create large chain traction (about 5 times the pedal force).
