When I was a kid playing DK64, Angry Aztec stood out as the most memorable of all the levels. The whole level just seem like a big mystery to me, there was so much in the level that I didn’t understand how to access (with only donkey and diddy) and for the places I could access, they were all mega spooky; The constant wind, the burning hot sand and “the voice” that will forever echo in my head.
So believe it or not one of my biggest inspirations for this cover was “insaneintherain”; I love how Carlos can take a song and really make it his own, by completely embracing a style of music and even adding his own original bits. So for this cover I thought I’d try do that, but instead of Jazz and Sax, I’d do it with Metal and Guitar. I’m really proud of what I came up with, the rhythm parts are a lot of fun to play, not to mention the main melody is great to play and rework.
Something that I really liked in the level was the contrast between outside and inside; everything outside fells dry, hot. While the inside areas fell damp and cold, so that contrast was something I wanted to incorporate into my arrangement, with the beginning and ending being ‘inside’ and middle being ‘outside’. I think it turned out well, although I think I dragged it out a bit too much, I’ll check audience retention later on, and we’ll find out.
I also put in a Guitar solo, which I haven’t done in a while. I don’t normally do solos because I tend to aim to high and end up curling into a ball, or I just take way too long to complete the solo. This time however I didn’t do anything I was uncomfortable with, and as a result I got the solo done so much quicker than normal. I might try doing solos more often now, it’s something I want to improve on, and I feel it’s something my covers are lacking.
