Anger gets a bad reputation, but it was never meant to be the enemy. It's actually a built-in alarm system designed to protect relationships.
When someone lies, or does something unloving, disrespectful, unfair, or untrue, anger shows up to say something is wrong here, and if it keeps happening, it's going to damage this relationship and hurt everyone involved. That's the whole point of it. Anger isn't there to tear connection apart. It's there to protect it.
It also gives you the push to actually deal with what's wrong. That's where cortisol comes in, the chemical your brain releases with anger, fear, and stress. It's what gives you that adrenaline rush, the extra energy, the laser focus that says this needs to get fixed, this needs to get talked about, so things can go back to honesty and trust.
For a lot of people, especially anyone carrying Complex Trauma, anger never got to be safe growing up. Maybe it got punished, laughed at, or used against you. So you learn to shove it down, brush it off, or turn it on yourself instead of letting it do the job it was built for. That can mess with emotional regulation later on, and make trust issues, boundaries, and self-worth a lot harder to navigate as an adult.
Healing often means learning to actually listen to anger again, treating it like useful information instead of something dangerous, and trusting that naming what hurts can lead back to something honest instead of more damage.
