Author of The Truth Agenda and Conspiracies, Andy Thomas takes a sideways look at the continual media focus on the rise of Donald Trump, ‘fake news’, ‘post-truth’ and Brexit, and questions some of the assumptions being made about them. Was there really ever a pre-‘post-truth’ era, and if news is fake, which news, and who should be the arbiters of truth? Proposed ‘solutions’ seriously risk closing down legitimate alternative enquiry. Rather than living in the “dark” times we keep being told they are, could the challenges we are currently being presented with actually be the very things that help usher in a new and better era?

![Pippa King - SLEEPWALKING INTO A SURVEILLANCE STATE
Children’s rights campaigner Pippa King asks why, with biometric technology, RFID and the ‘Internet of Things’ being rolled out in schools, the next generation is being familiarised to these technologies with little regard for the consequences of mass data-sharing. Increasingly, government agencies and corporations gather biometric data from us, covertly and overtly – this, coupled with our use of radio frequency devices, reveals ever more data about us, with immense potential for profiling and predictive behaviour modelling without our knowledge. These technologies have the capacity to erode privacy and civil liberties – we may even be the last generation that truly experiences what privacy is.
