A summary of what is known about Andrew Jackson's would-be assassin, Richard Lawrence. He was a thirty-five year old painter would quit working three years prior to trying to shoot the president. He believed that he was actually King Richard III of England, that he was entitled to two estates in his home country and that President Jackson was preventing him from getting his money.

Lawrence's attempt (which took place on January 30, 1835) was the first recorded assassination attempt on a sitting president. In many ways Lawrence would foreshadow the assassins (both failed and successful) to come in the following years of the United States. He was mentally ill, like Charles J. Guiteau (who killed President James A. Garfield) and John Hinckley (who tried to kill President Ronald Reagan), angry over issues related to his perceived status and upset about the president's policies. In particular, he wanted Jackson dead because of the Democrat president's opposition to the Second Nation Bank. He hoped that if Jackson's vice president Martin Van Buren took office he would allow Congress to establish the bank.

Lawrence didn't succeed in killing anyone and was sentenced to commitment in mental asylums where he spent the next 26 years until his death at age 60. For Lawrence it was the most dramatic event of his life. For Jackson it was just one of the many stressful events in his turbulent presidency.
