In Chapter 11 of 23 in his 2014 Capture Your Flag interview, environmental advocate Andrew Hutson answers "How Do You Establish Trust When Building Relationships?" In his environmental advocacy work, Hutson often works with partners and businesses who may not initially trust one another. Working in situations where interests often are not completely aligned, he learns to earn trust and even salvage trust, by showing empathy and understanding someone else's point of view. This helps him enter a give-and-take negotiation that begins a long process of incrementally building trust. Andrew Hutson is an environmental advocate at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where he is currently Director, Value Chain Initiatives. Hutson earned a PhD in Public Policy from UNC-Chapel Hill, a Masters in Environment Management (MEM) from Duke University and a BA in International Relations from Michigan State University.
