My first experience with Andrew Ashong's music was a 90-second snippet of the expansive "Flowers." Dizzy, I scoured the interweb for more and found nothing, no photos, website, not even a full track. Eventually I found "flowers" in full bloom and even Andrew himself on the same trip to London that produced this Sampha session. Like Sampha, Andrew lived and worked at his home on the far outskirts of London. Sampha in a room at the top of the stairs and Andrew in the basement. A meticulously crafted cavernous studio, compiled over years and years of collecting, thrifting, and tweaking, became the space where Andrew's EP sprung to life. But it was upstairs in Andrew's bedroom where his musical journey first took shape when a generous friend bought him a set of turntables. Today Andrew barely has room for anything else besides his vinyl collection and his lovely girlfriend Desta. Lucky for him, there's plenty of room to roam in the storybook woods surrounding his home where Andrew, his guitar, and his girl gave us something very very "Special."
