"The piece is called Wiener Blut or Viennese Blood and it was composed by Strauss for a Royal Wedding no less! The music celebrated the marriage of Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi’s daughter to Prince Leopold of Bavaria. And I remember performing this in an equally majestic setting, The Royal Albert Hall in London back in the year 2000. Wonderful memories and a wonderful waltz."
"Wiener Blut" (Viennese Blood) is one of Johann Strauss II’s most famous and elegant waltzes, composed in 1873. It's a quintessential example of the golden-age Viennese waltz — graceful, patriotic, and richly melodic.
The waltz was premiered at a ball celebrating the marriage of Archduchess Gisela of Austria to Prince Leopold of Bavaria. It was symbolically titled "Viennese Blood" to honor the imperial heritage and cultural pride of Austria.
Later, in 1899 (the year of Strauss’s death), a full operetta titled Wiener Blut was assembled using this waltz and other pieces by Strauss, with the libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein.
