chester bennington, lead singer of linkin park, was found hanged in his home on the morning of july 20th, aged 41. he left behind his bandmates, friends, wife, kids, and fans. he was struggling with depression as described by the lyrics in all the band's work, but mostly in their last album one more light. we all should've known something would happen but we were too preoccupied with insulting the pop sound of their new music. too busy being excited for concerts to think about the mental health of the band. at least i was, and i'm sorry. i'll never get to see this band live now, at least not with chester, although i was planning to on august 30th. that won't happen now, but that's not important. what's important is that this generation has lost an incredible voice, an incredible person of artistic design in the world of nu-metal, alternative, electronic and pop-rock. amazing celebrities keep being lost to us, david bowie, chris cornell, robin williams... but this one hit me the hardest. i grew up with this band, heard this song, shadow on the day, on the radio as a young kid. grew up to anthems like numb and what i've done. fell in love with softer songs like leave out all the rest and waiting for the end, as well as jams like bleed it out and given up. they have so many amazing songs and albums in their discography, songs i and millions of other fans will always hold dear. they were a band that defined the 2000s, every teenager in 2000 was blasting hybrid theory and in 2003 everyone blasted meteora. they changed the lives of so many people. they shaped my taste in music in the 7th and 8th grade, along with skillet, three days grace and a plethora of other rock bands. if it weren't for linkin park i'd probably have a very different music taste today. i owe them a ton. i'm just so sad this happened, that chester felt he had to take his own life due to all the pain he endured since he was a child. depression is a monster, but it should not be considered taboo to talk about it. if you feel so terrible that you feel like you need to die, PLEASE, talk to someone. i know we're all reacting to this death because it's a celebrity, and i admit that if chester was just a regular person, less people would be talking about it, but still, like the song one more light says, every life matters. the smallest star should be kept flickering because life is so much better than death, and if you can combat your demons then you may be able to be truly happy. i hope that all of us together can get through this loss, and i wish a world of comfort on the remaining members of linkin park and the family and friends chester left behind. we all must stay strong and keep the spirit of this band alive. i apologize if this message sounded cheesy or preachy but i've spent days since i heard the news grieving, mainly listening to linkin park and spending time reminiscing on their subreddit. this is the first celebrity death in my life that has affected me this much because it was someone who shaped so much of who i am musically. thank you for all the music you've created for us, chester, and rest in piece wherever you are now.
