I won't stop talking about this until there's a change! Research clearly shows that episiotomy increases the risk of severe perineal tears during childbirth, rather than protecting against them. Although guidelines have been updated to recommend its use only in emergency situations, many providers are still performing it regularly. Don't hesitate to ask your provider about their opinion on episiotomy and their rates of performing it. The answers should be 'Only in emergencies or hardly ever' and 'under 5%'.
