Ancient Architects | Ancient Tsunami Destroyed 9,000-Year-Old Mediterranean Coastal Village 🌊😱 @AncientArchitects | Uploaded January 2023 | Updated October 2024, 4 hours ago.
In the past 10,000 years, the level of the Mediterranean Sea has risen by around 40 metres. This means that many early Neolithic sites in the Levant are now underwater.
Over the past couple of decades dozens of flooded sites have been found including the amazing Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Atlit Yam. It’s around 9,000 years old and includes a a deep water well, a stone circle, houses, burials, artefacts, and interesting piles of fish ready for trading or in storage.
This site was abandoned suddenly. The reason? It looks like a volcanic collapse of the flank of Mount Etna 8,500 years ago may well have sent a 40m or 130ft high Tsunami into the Levantine coast. People abandoned Atlit Yam and never returned and it’s now 12 metres below sea level.
