This act of treading on your enemies is an overarching theme that has been echoed throughout history. The ancient Egyptians did it with their shoes. King Tut’s sandals had depictions of Egypt’s enemies so that he would physically trample them with every step. The Romans depicted it in sculpture as we can see with this statue of Hadrian stepping on a defeated enemy… and more recently, the Al-Rashid hotel in Baghdad had a mosaic floor portrait of American president George Bush Senior at their entrance so all visitors had to trample the leader of the greatest power in the West at the time- just like at Meroe with Augustus thousands of years earlier.
