The Dark Streets of Ashkelon: Many of the buildings of ancient Ashkelon were removed by later people settling on the mound, which makes architectural reconstruction difficult for the archaeologists. The 5th century BC settlement exposed in Grid 51, however, has massive walls preserved that make it easy to visualize what the city looked like in the Persian Period of occupation. Here I can stroll down the street and examine two distinct phases of construction. I also give you a glimpse at one of the famous dog burials found at Ashkelon
