University of Aberdeen | Ancient Glaciers and Climate | Field Trip to the Peruvian Andes @universityofaberdeen | Uploaded April 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Professor Matteo Spagnolo from the University of Aberdeen recently visited the Peruvian Andes along with Professor Brice Rea, PhD student Lucy Ashpitel and a team of Peruvian and Spanish colleagues to undertake research on past glaciers and climate changes. The team of physical geographers targeted a remote, high-altitude, arid location in the Peruvian Andes and collected various samples deposited by tropical glaciers that were much bigger than they are today, when climate was colder and wetter. The study will shade light on some of the unresolved questions relative to the past atmospheric circulation in the southern hemisphere. Fieldwork, which is an integral part of our Geography degrees and provides an important transferrable skills, allows us to explore diverse and unique environments such as these, while providing some of the most memorable experiences for students and staff.
Check out Professor Spagnolo's diary for the fieldwork at abdn.ac.uk/geosciences/departments/geography-environment/peru-field-work-2137.php
Additional footage and images provided by Ronald Concha and Pool Vasquez (INGEMMET, Peru).
