Recent ancient DNA studies are forcing us to rethink the story of early medieval Europe.
For generations, many people were taught to believe that the presence of Black Africans in Europe was mainly the result of modern migration, the transatlantic trade, or the colonial period. But new DNA evidence from two skeletons found in southern England tells a very different story.
Researchers studying 1,400-year-old burials in Kent and Dorset discovered two individuals with recent West African ancestry. Genetic analysis suggests that roughly one-quarter of their ancestry traced back to West African populations, meaning that one of their grandparents was likely from Black Africa. These individuals lived in the 6th and early 7th centuries—before the Moorish conquest of Spain and long before the modern colonial era.
Even more importantly, these individuals were not outsiders living on the margins. One was buried in a high-status Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Updown in Kent, surrounded by rich grave goods connected to Frankish and Byzantine trade. The other was found at Worth Matravers in Dorset, in a burial setting shaped by late Roman Christian traditions.
Together, these discoveries challenge the idea of a sealed-off, ethnically homogeneous medieval Europe. They suggest that Africa and Europe were far more connected than mainstream history has often allowed, and that people of African descent were present, integrated, and sometimes high-status in early medieval England.
This video explores what these findings mean for our understanding of Black presence in Europe, early African mobility, ancient seafaring, the Moors, Cheddar Man, and the long history of African contributions to European civilization.

This multidisciplinary analysis explores the African roots of the Sumerian civilization, synthesizing genetic, linguistic, and craniometric evidence to reveal the foundational connection between the Black-headed people and the Nilotic and Saharan migrations. By examining everything from Haplogroup E to Bantu linguistic parallels, we re-evaluate the origins of the worlds first urban society.
