Long before the rise of the Aztecs, a vast and powerful city dominated the heart of ancient Mexico. Teotihuacan—later known as the “City of the Gods”—was one of the largest urban centers in the ancient world, home to massive pyramids, grand avenues, and tens of thousands of people. Yet for centuries, the true identity of its builders remained one of archaeology’s greatest mysteries.
In this documentary-style video, new scientific evidence finally brings us closer to the people behind Teotihuacan. Using ancient DNA recovered from human remains buried within the city, researchers have reconstructed mitochondrial genomes that reveal who the Teotihuacanos were, where they came from, and how closely they are connected to modern Indigenous populations of Mexico.
We explore how genetic data, combined with archaeological and isotope analysis, shows that Teotihuacan was built by local Indigenous peoples with deep roots in Central Mexico. The evidence reveals a complex, multi-ethnic city sustained by maize agriculture, organized through extended family communities, and powered by an immense labor force capable of constructing one of the greatest pyramid cities in the Americas.
