Ladar is the creator of Lavabit the encrypted email service that was taken by himself to avoid his customers being the victim of the governments prying eyes after the fallout of Edward Snowden.
We discuss his talk titled "Encryption A 2nd Amendment Right".
We also discuss his very unique Workshop.

If you’ve ever wanted to de-Google your droid, or been interested in what it takes to create a “smart” phone, or tablet, devoid of the pre-loaded spyware, and bloatware it normally ships with, then this workshop is for you. Every student will receive an 8” tablet from a well known brand, which will be theirs to keep. This is a hands-on workshop, in which students will be guided through the process of forcibly unlocking the bootloader shipped with the provided tablets, using an Android security exploit. Students will then be guided through the process of replacing the recovery partition with a popular open source alternative. Finally, students will be guided through the process of rebooting their device into recovery mode, so they can wipe and load it with an open source build of Android 11.
In addition to the practical skills above, the workshop will cover the generalized device unlocking process, and provide an introduction to the security implications involved. This workshop will also cover the pros and cons associated with installing Google Play Services, and the Google Play Store, along with the steps for doing so. We’ll also discuss alternatives like the F-Droid app store, or the use of a stool pigeon, to acquire and sideload apps.
Finally, we’ll discuss how these knowledge and skills learned in this workshop can be applied to the creation of other Google free devices, and how those devices fit into the larger privacy and security landscape.

** If possible, please bring a laptop computer that is a) already running a Linux distribution, or b) capable of booting from a USB stick, into “live” Linux environment. Students without a compatible laptop will have to share the single computer we provide.
